Alternating Gradient Focusing and Deceleration of Polar Molecules

چکیده
Beams of polar molecules can be focused using an array of electrostatic lenses in alternating gradient (AG) configuration. They can also be accelerated or decelerated by applying an appropriate high voltage switching sequence to the lenses. AG focusing is applicable to molecules in both lowfield and high-field-seeking states and is particularly well suited to the problem of decelerating heavy molecules and those in their ground rotational state. We describe the principles of AG deceleration and set out criteria to be followed in decelerator design, construction and operation. We calculate the longitudinal and transverse focusing properties of a decelerator, and exemplify this by 2D-imaging studies of a decelerated beam of metastable CO molecules.

Alternating-gradient focusing and deceleration of large molecules
Exploiting the Stark effect, neutral polar molecules can be focused and decelerated in an array of time-varying inhomogeneous electric fields in alternatinggradient configuration. Using this principle, a new experiment for the focusing and deceleration of large molecules from a molecular beam has been set up. With the new setup, the alternating-gradient focusing and deceleration of benzonitrile...
متن کاملStark deceleration of OH radicals in low-field-seeking and high-field-seeking quantum states
The Stark deceleration of OH radicals in both low-field-seeking and high-field-seeking levels of the rovibronic Π3/2, v = 0, J = 3/2 ground state is demonstrated using a single experimental setup. Applying alternating-gradient focusing, OH radicals in their low-field-seeking Π3/2, v = 0, J = 3/2, f state have been decelerated from 345 m/s to 239 m/s, removing 50 % of the kinetic energy using on...
متن کاملOn deflection fields, weak-focusing and strong-focusing storage rings for polar molecules.
In this paper, we analyze electric deflection fields for polar molecules in terms of a multipole expansion and derive a simple but rather insightful expression for the force on the molecules. Ideally, a deflection field exerts a strong, constant force in one direction, while the force in the other directions is zero. We show how, by a proper choice of the expansion coefficients, this ideal can ...
متن کاملStark deceleration of CaF molecules in strong- and weak-field seeking states.
We report the Stark deceleration of CaF molecules in the strong-field seeking ground state and in a weak-field seeking component of a rotationally-excited state. We use two types of decelerator, a conventional Stark decelerator for the weak-field seekers and an alternating gradient decelerator for the strong-field seekers, and we compare their relative merits. We also consider the application o...
متن کاملOptimizing the resolution of the alternating-gradient m/μ selector
We study the focusing of large neutral molecules in a molecular beam using electric fields. Since all quantum states of these molecules are high-field seeking under the practical experimental conditions, alternating gradient (AG) focusing has to be applied. The optimal ac frequency that yields the highest transmission depends on m/μ, where μ is the dipole moment and m denotes the mass. Therefor...
